Resumo: Objective: The study aimed to assess the salivary metabolomic profile of cigarette smokers and examine the correlation of changes with clinical data and tobacco consumption. Study Design: The study included 26 frequent and exclusive smokers of industrialized cigarettes in the cigarette group, while the control group consisted of non-smokers. Unstimulated total saliva was collected for analysis. Metabolic profile data were obtained using gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer, and correlations were made with cotinine levels measured by an immunoenzymatic test, as well as with clinical data using statistical analysis in the MetaboAnalyst 6.0 platform. Results: The partial least squares-discriminant analysis showed significant separation between the cigarette group and the control group. The volcano plot analysis revealed 31 statistically relevant metabolites (p value ≤0.05) for correlation with clinical data and tobacco consumption among smokers. Notably, glyceraldehyde stood out due to its mutagenic properties. Conclusion: Evaluating the salivary metabolome of smokers can serve as an important tool for understanding biomarkers associated with smoking.
