Resumo: Odontogenic lesions (OL) constitute a heterogeneous group of lesions, which present morphological and behavioral variability. Its pathogenesis, progression and maintenance are related to epithelial and/or ectomesenchymal remnants of odontogenesis that may contain multipotent stem cells (SC). SC have been identified in pathological situations, such as benign epithelial OL. These cells are characterized by potential to differentiate into multiple cell lineages, high proliferation rates and self-renewal capacity. The criteria used for identification of SC include positive expression of specific surface antigens: CD44, CD90, CD133, NOTCH, SOX-2, NANOG, Bmi-1, ABCG2 e OCT-4. Objective: The aim of this review was to explore literature on presence and participation of SC in pathogenesis and evolution in OL. Study Design: Narrative literature review searching the PubMed and Medline databases. Articles published in English between 2010 and 2023 were retrieved. Conclusion: The included studies confirmed the presence of CT in OL, especially through SOX-2, OCT-4 and CD44. High immunoexpression of these proteins may be associated with development, maintenance, progression and recurrence.
