Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: Objective: This study aimed to evaluate cases of oral leucoplakia in order to characterize differences between unifocal leukoplakia (UL) and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL).
Study design: A total of 454 cases of UL and 47 cases of PVL were evaluated. Data regarding sociodemographic, clinical and histopathological aspects were collected.
Results: UL was statistical associated with men, smokers and alcohol users, while PVL was associated with women, non-smokers and non-users of alcohol. Clinical appearance of leukoplakia was mainly homogeneous in UL with mean size of 229 mm² (± 315) and non-homogenous in PVL with mean size of 940 mm² (±1074). Both conditions were more prevalent in buccal mucosa, gingiva, and lateral border of the tongue. UL showed association of the non-homogenous appearance with epithelial dysplasia and malignant transformation, but PVL did not.
Conclusion: UL is more prevalent in men exposed to deleterious extrinsic factors and has a higher risk of dysplasia and/or malignant transformation in non-homogenous lesions. PVL is more prevalent in women without exposure to deleterious extrinsic factors and shows similar risk of dysplasia and/or malignant transformation in both homogenous and non-homogenous lesions.
